Yayoi Kusama: Look Now, See Forever

Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama, transformed the children's art center at Brisbane's Gallery of Modern Art with the help of tiny hands. She offered children colorful dot stickers and asked them to apply them to 'The Obliteration Room'. This interactive installation was first commissioned by the Queensland Art Gallery for Kids' in 2002.

When in Milan recently I met a talented group of warm folk who all seem to revolve around furniture design and art. One dude in particular whose sense of humor and sensibility was somehow familiar and comforting to be around ( especially coming from Paris where the good humor realm is sort of tweaked), was Jakub Zak. I am stunned by his work. It's industrial design meets art and craft in all the right places.

He recently teamed up with his long time buddy and gallerist, Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte, to launch the first collection from their new studio called Oeuffice.

I had a super lovely time participating in the Jack's Jumble Sale event at Candelaria in Paris. I made caramels and organic sandwich cookies. I finally found a shoe company that has beautifully constructed shoes in traditional styles that are both a little bit elven and also American old school. So much goodness it's kind of hard to take. The company is called Yuketen and "...Since 1985, designer Yuki Matsuda has paid homage to the American crafts and traditions by treasure hunting for outstanding examples of footwear and luggage in remote locales spread out across the rolling Appalachians to the high Sierras."

This year for my birthday, Adrian made me a sculpture. It's a portrait of the two of us. I melted. We are connected via a crystal form representing a million things. Can you tell who is who?

A Barrage of Bouroullec

My mellow mannered bearded Parisian bro, Erwan Bouroullec, would not normally come off as someone who would have anything to do with the palace of Versailles. He and his brother Ronan have won a competition to design a permanent addition to the glorious Gabriel staircase inside the palace. They have yet to announce the piece, but I'll keep you posted. The staircase was originally designed in 1772 by architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel, yet was only completed in 1985.

Also, they curently have a retrospective featuring the last 10 years of their work at the Pompidou-Metz in the alsatian region of France. It's a huge deal for them as they were also named designers of the year by the Maison & Objet trade show this year. All this while still young and have so much ahead. So much is happening for these guys. Im very proud of Erwan and his work because he takes inspiration from the best source: nature. He's a gentle soul with a timeless vision and a great sense of humor.

Adrian helps produce various pieces of the Bouroullec's for furniture exhibitions at Gallery Kreo. Adrian says " ...I always enjoy working on Bouroullec pieces. They have a natural quality almost like a plant or animal, and when working on them in close proximity you can feel their character, the affect they have in your personal space."

The brothers are originally from Quimper, a town in the north west region of Brittany, France. Adrian and I explored Brittany last summer with native Bretonne, chanteuse and friend Hélène Renaut, who showed us what eating fresh caught Mackerel is all about. The region has serene beaches, salty sea folk and a chill countryside vibe. I will post a full report on the area on our sister site, the Trail of Crumbs, shortly.

We drove north yesterday to see the sea. While cruising around the harbor of Honfleur, I walked with a gasoline slick shape for a while. This is it. Even though it's a toxic floater, I was struck by it's trippy beauty. I sort of love it as an album cover image. I like making graphic designs using my camera as the tool.

In the magical medieval village of Noyers-sur-Serein, there is an art center opening on September 10th with a group exhibition featuring many mediums and artists from California. Adrian and I are two of the artists.

CaliforNoyers, curated by Rod DeWeese, is the inaugural exhibition for the La Porte Peinte Centre Pour Les Arts. It will bring together 10 California-based artists working in various mediums to engage, explore, create and collaborate with the local community to bring a deeper awareness of the commonalities and cultural similarities that link these seemingly disparate places. The show will be preceded by a three-week residency at the Porte Peinte.

Many of the artists are there now working on the show to allow for an organic, site specific process. It promises to be a weekend full of friends and visitors from far away, enchanting the village with new work to view and stories to share.

If any of you care to join in the festivities, there are a few charming b&b's and guest houses around the village. The accommodations are listed here. Our friend, Pierre Paillot and his family, also run a lovely wine store (he can advise you on incredible local wines) , butcher shop ( featuring local and homemade charcuterie amoung other treasures), and a restaurant. There are some interesting spots to check out in the region like the Fabuloserie, Musée Colette, a Sound Museum, A Medieval Castle getting rebuilt using all traditional methods, Musée de Laduz, La Métairie Bruyere Graphic Arts Centre, the list goes one and on. Not to mention stellar wineries very close by.

Noyers is a 2 hours drive from Paris, or you can take the local Burgundy line that has several departures per day, and get off in Tonnerre. From there it's a 15 minute taxi ride. Here is the number for a cab in Tonnerre that you could call: 03 86 54 45 40 .

La Porte Peinte Centre pour les Arts is pleased to announce its inaugural exhibition, CALIFORNOYERS, opening on September 10, 2011.

La Porte Peinte Centre pour les Arts, founded by Michelle Anderson Binczak and Hiro Ota, is an international arts centre based in Noyers sur Serein, a remarkable medieval village in Burgundy. Housed in a stunning, labyrinthine medieval building that has been featured in numerous films including La Grande Vadrouille, the centre will offer opportunities for creative exploration and exchange in an inspiring, peaceful environment. The village is classified as one of the 100 Most Beautiful Villages in France: its fairy-tale towers, ramparts, and half-timbered houses nestle against the banks of the Serein as it winds its tranquil way through the wheat fields and vineyards of northern Burgundy. Within this enchanting setting, La Porte Peinte will offer a gallery, atelier spaces, workshop spaces, event spaces, a tea room, and accommodations for artists, makers, and writers in residence.

The Centre’s inaugural exhibition, CALIFORNOYERS, features work by artists from both California and Noyers, much of it developed during a two week residency for the California artists at La Porte Peinte.

During the residency each artist has created work inspired by the local landscape, reflecting on the natural and cultural diversity of the region as well as on commonalities linking both places. Their work reflects the changing moods in California that are leading people to consider simpler and more sustainable lifestyles, an abiding way of life in many parts of rural France. Along with such concerns, the artists interrogate cultural perspectives on landscape and habitat, plants and animals, time and place, decay and renewal.

The exhibition was conceived and curated by California born Noyers resident Rod DeWeese, as a way to bring his two seemingly disparate worlds together through artistic collaboration and dialogue. The exhibition will continue to evolve over the months to come, as new artists pass through La Porte Peinte contributing new ideas and concepts.

My sister, Simone Rubi, played a magical set of music along with Adrian on bass and Ludwig Dahlberg on drums. In the background there was a video of the coastline shot by Simone on the road between Santa Barbara and Malibu. The projector's light mimicked the sun behind the screen. Epic.

This is Luis. The friend, fellow project maker, cook, garden keeper, teacher, laughing partner and guardian of Casa Rincon, the family house in Mexico where Adrian has a recording studio with Erlend. We go there every winter and find the balance we need when living a hustle hustle city life in Paris. We think of Luis often and have this portrait I took last January, here with us in Paris ... a land far away from the tropical coastline of Mexico.

We went on an afternoon drive out into the dry golden plains that surround Marfa, TX and found this oasis. There is a small natural spring that feeds into this pond as well as a water silo that sits next to it. We helped my sister , Simone, climb up the ladder on the side of the silo and took some warrior princess style portraits. When I feel restless, going on a long drive outside a city and into a natural setting is the best.

A water main broke on the corner behind the courthouse. The result was a glittery townscape frozen in time in an almost black & white photograph. I stared and stared and it kept getting more exciting. The chain link fence turned into a crystal lattice and the icicles everywhere looked like perfect ice swords.

We visited the JB Blunk house last month, up in Inverness, CA. It's an active home studio with revolving resident artists and craftspeople that continue to add magical vibes to the late JB Blunk's creative space. The house now functions as one of the best residency programs in the country.

I dream of doing a residency there with Adrian, and will hopefully do that in the next couple years.

It's the ultimate northern California location for searching deep into your instincts for art making.

This is Pierre Paillot, a sommelier and restaurant director. He lives in a medieval village called Noyers-sur-Serein in the Burgundy region of France. He was raised here and left in his early twenties to work with restaurants abroad, including Mint in Dublin and Gordon Ramsay's Royal Hospital Road. After expanding his winery address book, he took off, bought a van, and visited every wine producer that interested him around Europe for a year and half.

He just bought the house behind him here which is an enchanted building made up of four houses that have all been connected over the years. Walls have been knocked down and rooms joined, and now it's a labyrinth of a house where you can disappear. He is a dreamer who will transform this into a Gite (french B&B), grow his own grapes on land purchased nearby, and will hopefully host many meals in the years to come. An accomplished young man who knows how to pour a perfect glass.

A few years ago Jerome was living in my hometown (Santa Barbara, California) for a while, working for a large footwear design firm. It was during this chapter that I met Jerome, and he was definitely not the tan surfer bro that I was used to seeing around this part of California. He was an instant 'it' boy in town and everyone wanted to know who he was. He was the big city boy exuding international charisma and I was instantly sure that he would be an inspiring friend for years to come.

Jerome grew up in the french speaking region of Canada, lived in London for many years during and after his student life at Cordwainers College (while bouncing around with London's music scene), and then eventually moved to California. After tons and tons of hard work, working with a variety of footwear designers, his time had finally come and he launched his own collection in 2008.

He has a keen sense of how to design shoes that look incredible on a woman's foot, and possesses a sky's worth of natural talent. He get's it. We are so lucky. Jerome is an artist with a unique vision. Between his elegant choice of materials and colors and his eye for modern shapes, his work is powerful yet sensitive - similar to a lot of women I know who care about art and music and wear his shoes.

This is Nathalie. She is from Lyon and is a performance artist. I met her at the rue Martel apartment in passing and knew I would see more of her. Soon after our quick meeting, we cooked dinner with one of my favorite people, Jerome C. Rousseau , and all had a magical evening among new and old friends.

She has an incredible story to tell. I'm hoping she will design a performance soon and share it with the people of Paris. You will find out more about her here.

In a conversation during my recent birthday party, my friend Marco told me all about his

I'm slowly finding inspiration while spending 10 days in a tiny village here in the Burgundy region of France. When I arrived I had no car, knew no one, and had no plans. Now I've met Madame Mignot around the corner who sells vegetables, eggs, and walnut oil from her backyard. I've met the young chef who is giving Adrian a ride tomorrow in his truck to buy some walnut wood and also have an invitation to try homemade Burgundy liquor tomorrow before lunch. A butcher, a bakery, an art museum, a Wednesday market, 2 restaurants, one wine seller - take a walk with an open heart and get all that you need. Small town style. A necessary life exercise when living in a dense city full of complication and decoding.

Adolescence

Can I start by saying how stoked I am that the 80's are finally out and the 90's have been 'in'? The 90's were about so many things for me. Let's see, I was shifting into the 90's in Junior High School. Boom. The ultimate age for absorbing everything and anything. Too much at times.

Obsessions, secrets, anonymous note passing, butterfly stomachs, day dreaming, crying, sneaking, yelling, lying, confessing, impressing, giggling, bonding, privacy... it was everything to be a teenager.

By the time movies like Stealing Beauty, Singles and Reality Bites came out, I was a bright-eyed college student. I have friends who are stylists here in Paris who work with all the big guns, and when one of them came over to put together looks for a big feature, I told him he should just watch Singles. He turned to me and said, "What's that?". Euros are so fashionable but the references are painfully familiar to genre's they know little about. Perhaps I should be a 90's fashion consultant out here.

I remember going to see R. Bites with my new dorm friends. We were way into Ethan Hawke and thought Ben Stiller was totally lame. Stealing Beauty was my all time fave movie back then. It moved me to a point where I dreamed of olive groves and wine soaked countryside parties. I also loved 90's films like Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures and John Duigan's Flirting. Simone and I traveled a lot while picking up new music abroad and we loved the then-new British pop movement - especially bands like Pulp, Blur, The Stone Roses, Suede and Verve. It was cool to mix all night dance marathon raves and Brit-pop. Dancing-dancing-dancing into feeling-feeling-feeling. I was caught in-between watching 90210 with dorm buddies and quitting the volleyball scene to becoming an artist, going off the popular grid, and immersing myself in pop-art, obscure foreign cinema and music. I wanted to get existential and shed the silver city pink lipstick and opalescent nail polish. I was basically a teenager from the Santa Barbara bubble with a hunger for big cities like San Francisco and London.

That said, it's been a little mindbendy to see what was so popular for me in real time in the actual year 1991, be so nouveau trendy today. The 16 year olds in Paris are wearing what the 16 year old me wore in the 90's. Wow. I guess the sensation I'm feeling is what my older sister must of felt when the 80's were back in full steam. It's my turn to feel the timewarp. Dang, I'm being reminded of my awkward years and how shy I was to hit the dancefloor. I'm hearing the very songs from my non-cell phone school dance world on the radio while Im working at home. Love it.

I'll never forget the moment Micheal J. Fox was in my hometown, Santa Barbara, on State st. promoting the use of grey water or some such environmental concept. I was really into Back to the Future. My brother took a photo of M J. Fox with us girls in the background. He made copies of it and sold it at school. I had an aqua net sprayed wave of bangs and wore a short sleeved cotton button up shirt, collar slighly up, with a loud floral print on it. My shirt was tucked into my peach cotton pleated cuffed shorts from the gap with a leather belt and a huge silver buckle on it. Oh yeah, and on my feet were my light toned top siders with no socks ( a splash of Euro in there for sure) and on my finger was a silver dolphin ring.

My trip to Norway is coming to a close, but my heart is very much open. Last Friday I experienced a true Norwegian wedding, one of simplicity, sweetness, and all within a very intimate poignant party. Dear friends and parents of a porcelain skinned little boy, Frei, decided to have their ceremony take place in the small square just beneath their home on the hillside of storybook Bergen. Everyone gathered on both sides of a tiny cobbled lane leading up to the square, and then cheered them up to the steps where they performed the ceremony. Afterwords, we all walked in our own love parade to the Paris style sightseeing boat that took us to the Urdihuset (an old house specifically built for parties put on by the social elite) for the dinner and dance party. The New Wine performed along with a yacht rock style band (with members of the New Wine). The second band had three modern doo-wop girls singing backup with cute matching glittery outfits. It was so good. One of the best parties ever.

I was their photographer and found it very hard to take a bad photo of the radiant lovers... Viva love celebrations between good people and food friends. Tusen Takk!

Back in Bergen

Enjoying some sunny days in Bergen leading up to Eirik and Ina's wedding. I'm honored to be their photographer and portraitist for their magical day. I'm also baking cupcakes with Simone to add something scrumptious to the dessert table. What flavor? Eirik said Norway is famous for their berries so we might have to berry it up. Their neighbor and friend will be singing some notes with the use of her loop station which brings up memories of Leslie doing the same at my own wedding. Speaking of which... being by the sea here in Norway, makes me think about our post-wedding beach day with everyone in SB. GOODNESS.

I recently took a trip down to Spain and the Basque coast. I documented many of my meals there, especially in San Sebastian where it was all about the Pintxos. Basque tapas. I fell in love with the Basque country and can't wait to return and explore more into the countryside. I ended up lost outside of St. Jean du Luz and had one of the best meal of my life at L'Auberge Basque. I've uploaded the food tour (all food images) here.

In Invisible Thread, Rubi confronts the variety of her cast of subjects head on through the imposition of technical and compositional parameters. The criteria are simple: all images in the group were shot on her favorite camera, a 1949, square format Rolleiflex and are all printed the same size; also, every image contains a strong horizontal line across the frame. Displayed, the images are justified according to their individual horizon line, rather than the top, bottom, or center of the frame. The effect of these parameters simplifies and connects a seemingly disparate group of images, in effort to show their common provenance: Rubi's eye.

Another notion that emerged from this specific undertaking is the significance of horizons in the way we process, regard, and experience the world: It is how we arrange our written language; it is how we show chronologies; it is what happens when two arms reach for each other. A horizontal line is the simplest respresentation of a stable platform, our one true defense against the downward pull of gravity: the only thing that can truly hold us up. The frames of the photographs are custom made by designer/craftsman, Adrian Dentzel, from wood salvaged from the house in California in which Rubi grew up. Both the wood and the images are fragments of Rubi's personal world. Together, they are a physical and visual connection to her.

Buck and Camp, Marfa and the Year I Was Born

A new piece by Marfa artist Camp Bosworth and his studio floor. He and his lady, Buck, are two of the most special people in my world. I'm making a short documentary about Camp's work and Marfa and am bringing them some fresh squeezed orange juice in about 20 minutes. I have bags of oranges from my mother's trees back in Santa Barbara and need to share the love with this town. Is there anything better than fresh sweet orange juice ? I will be posting some more photos from the world of Buck and Camp shortly. Get ready.

Here is Tippi Hedren with her pet cheetah, Pharoah, taken in Los Angeles on the day I was born. She was in the Hitchock film, The Birds, which is a film that has haunted me for years. Isnt is incredible that we live with animals? Buck and Camp live with four dogs with very different crazy personalities. A sweet family.

The Root of it All

With editing my photo & art archive, I find myself thinking of the first connection to my art education: My grandmother, Llellwyn Jackson. She was a ballerina and modern dancer during the time of Isadora Duncan and was a very strong willed, adventurous woman. She broke boundaries through dance and was amoung some of the greatest female performance artists and dancers of American history. I found some incredible images of her in the online archives of the Library of Congress, all taken by the great Arnold Genthe, who also was Isadora Duncan's portraitist as well as many other female dancers, writers, and actors in the early 1900's. In these portraits she was only 16 or 17.

"...In the early 1900s two American female dancers, Isadora Duncan and Ruth St. Denis, as well as one German female dancer, Mary Wigman, started to rebel against the rigid constraints of Classical Ballet. Shedding the authoritarian controls surrounding classical ballet technique, costume, and shoes, these early modern dance pioneers focused on creative self-expression rather than on technical virtuosity. Modern dance is a more relaxed, free style of dance in which choreographers use emotions and moods to design their own steps, in contrast to ballet's structured code of steps. It has a deliberate use of gravity, whereas ballet strives to be light and airy... In 1903 - Isadora Duncan developed a dance technique influenced by the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzche and a belief that dance of the ancient Greeks (natural and free) was the dance of the future. Duncan developed a philosophy of dance based on natural and spiritual concepts and advocated for that acceptance of pure dance as a high art."

I was walking around in a parisian snowy daze and came across a poster with an old photo of a dancer on it. It looked just like my Grandmother. It turns out, there is an exhibition of Isadora Duncan in Paris right now, at the Musee Bourdelle, "Isadora Duncan: Une Sculpture Vivante" (A living sculpture). Duncan was a major celebrity in Belle Epoque Paris, and was a friend or acquaintance of most of the Paris-based artists of the day. It features 5 of her dance costumes, many photographs and drawings including sketches by Antoine Bourdelle during one of her performances in Paris, and her personal belongings. Bourdelle was a student of Rodin's, whom the Museum (and street) is named after. I cannot wait to see it. I will bask in the images and stories of my Grandmother's New York milieu. The exhibition is up until March 14, 2010. On one last note, I want to add that I lived in a beautiful apartment building in Oakland once, and I was told that she had lived there and the building was originally built for ballet dancers. So much is small in this world.

Reflecting and Twisting

Experiencing a delayed culture shock. Gearing up for the re-launch of my site while maintaining alertness to the world around me. Constantly plugging into the nuances of Paris life has been twisting my brain. A deep breath here and there and all is good.

Excited about the collaboration between my sister and London based designer, Leslie Hendin. They are teaming up to create my new photo based art site. When making my past/present lists at new year's , I promised myself that I would re-design my site, find a publisher for a portrait book idea I have cooking up, and have my first Paris exhibition locked in before the Summer. List it up.

Le Gang

An ongoing work in progress: Portraits of my circle of radness. The three up top are Tülay, Hannes, and Hélène. I am going to have a portrait show of my "Paris Portraits" in Marfa next year. I'm really excited.

The interior shot is of the sacred flat, 'Martel'. It belongs to dear friends who have lovingly shared it with Adrian and I and it was the best liason into my Paris living. I put some papel picado flags up for a spell to give the flat a little Mexi blast of vibe and color. A magical space. Lots of epic memories shared inside that room.

Erlend, Eirik and Les were in town last month, so naturally a cozy night off the road (or life) had to happen at chez nous. Shoes and pressure off. Les is stoking on the Glass Slipper, a current project yet to finish it's prototyping chapter, by Adrian and his Glass Cube world.

Balcony Tears

What a night. At Le Bataclan, we watched our Bergen boys, Erlend and Eirik, from the balcony with permo smiles. Warm light hit every face in the crowd and we sang, snapped, and clapped along to some of the most beautiful modern music the world has to offer. The bros dedicated a song to Adrian and I, "Homesick", and Erlend blew a kiss up to the balcony. Sweetness.

The Kings of Convenience are so heart stringy and dear to me. Simone, Adrian and I went on tour with them during both of their US tours and lived out of suitcases and tourbus sleeping pods. It's been a few years since those days, so last night's concert was a major reunion that brought me right back to my dense northern California days of musical and artful friends, spontaneity, and a deep love for all things pure and golden.

To top it off, Feisty happened to be in town, and at the end of the performance, she appeared on stage and sang two duets. The audience went wild and we, up in the balcony, held hands with joyful watery eyes. Im such a softy for radical moments that remind me of how amazing my friends and life are.

Afterwards, in true sister-of-the-band tradition, I made carrot-ginger soup for all. Although I'm far from California, I can still experience the same golden moments that keep life warm and full of sun. Stoked.

The Yay Bay

I discovered something. Stopping in NYC en route to Home is a natural way to transition into American life again. NYC feels a little bit Euro and a lot US. It's sort of like tempering your body and mind slowly and warmly, rather than jumping into a cold pool. NYC was quick and magical. Checked in on Mariella at her ballet school, and her 16-year-old-in-nyc world. Saw Linda before her move to Minneapolis. Watched sister Simone play with Rubies. Collected a new hat at the beautiful Worth & Worth hat shop. Walked passed the blanket rapped Vanessa Redgrave in the newly Fall central park and pretty much hugged the city in general.

It feels so good to be back in California for a spell now. After a week in Santa Barbara surrounding Brooke & Crosby's wedding we headed back to the bay last night. Had yet another incredible meal at Charlie's restaurant, Pizzaiolo, where Ingrid and I traditionally go to reconnect. To start, there was flatbread with eggplant, a cucumber and farro salad, a few perfect beets and ricotta. Next up was a halibut mantecato that reminded me of a dish I had in Portugal resembling salt cod (Bacalao). The pizza for us was cherry tomato with arugula with a perfectly salted crust. YUM. Some shell beans on the side with a bit of aioli as well. For desert I had an affogato and a walk home.

Excited about a shoot on Friday with the lovely Kacey Johansing. We met eachother in Paris via Bart Davenport and was FLOORED by her singing. Going to do something magical with her involving inventive looks with 70's lighting. New and old at the same time. That's how I roll.

Kings in Paris

I hung out on set yesterday in magical Provins, France, and absorbed the ins and outs of creating a music video project. Francois was a positive force on set as he smiled his way through it all. My friends from Norway, Kings of Convenience, have a new record coming out in October called "Declaration of Dependence" and this video shoot was for the single, "Mrs. Cold". I shot the cover of this record while we were all spending time together at Casa Rincon, Mexico. So nice.

"Paris suits you well"

Been calling Paris home for almost 3 months now. Moving from California back to Paris, after 10 years of jumping around in Oakland-Santa Barbara - Mexico - Paris - Marfa, feels incredibly new again. I feel new. I lived here straight after graduation in 1999 and had a trippy year of vision quests and independence. Im here again now with the love of my life and inspiration nation. Decade circle.

The latest project I recently finished was working with EMI records on the new Kings of Convenience record. It was a sweet surprise when they said I had "won" the competition. The image they chose was shot on the Rolleiflex camera and has a natural mood at the dusk hour in Mexico. Considering the hang outs at Casa Rincon Mexico are always super-duper-intense-and-rad, I am proud the photographs from such a magical vortex will live on ... attached to music that I LOVE. Check out Casa Rincon's recording studio, Glass Cube, where other KOC member, Erlend, recorded his latest record with WBA while renting the house for a 2 month period.

My mind is swimming with ideas for projects and I have began revisiting video & film as an extension of photography. Back in art school, I had a bunch of friends in the film department, and shot lots of 8mm and 16mm footage from the back seat of vespas and inside creepy old Chicago hotels. Some of those old 8mm films are now living in the archive of the Art Institute. I can't wait to see those again. It will be either tear-style funny or really heavy and poignant. Along with video, Im starting a travel blog dedicated to art, architecture, food, and finding all places 'in-between' that deserve publishing. I am way into sharing. I'm a twin afterall. Hi Simone.

Will be heading over to Belgium for the Pukkelpop music festival after Vetiver perform tomorrow. Will chill with Mike and see him play with Wilco, and then hook up with the duke when WBA play the following day. Between Vetiver, WBA, and Bart Davenport playing here and there, along with visits from travelling bros, I feel Im living in a place with a beautiful glistening bridge between Paris and home. Let our worlds expand.

Even though I've moved far away from home... home keeps coming back to me. So stoked to be feeling IT.

Moving Onwards

Hello friends,

A little news on my show in San Francisco:

My current show at Mollusk is coming down this week. Mollusk is a unique gallery space that has turned into an culty corner of contemporary art by Californian artists, carving a sweet niche in the art world. Other artists involved with Mollusk are Geoff McFetridge, Thomas Campbell, Alex Kopps, Kyle Field, and Nathaniel Russell. There are two more Mollusk locations, one in Brooklyn and another in Los Angeles.

The opening in April was such a fantastical evening (live performance by Rubies, and hors d'oeuvres by Miel) ... and now it's time for the work to move on to the next space... where will that be? It wants to travel and has long white wings, so if you have any ideas please be in touch. I tend to book a live act and make the opening a 'happening' not to be forgotten. Let's do this. I want to.

She is my sister-in-law. Both have such extreme beauty and specialness. Both are inbetween something. Becoming a mother. Becoming a woman.

Yogurt Panna Cotta with Rhubarb Sauce and Pain d'Amandes

I shot food photographs for the lovely Ingrid Pankonin yesterday. Her private chef business is Miel Cooking and if you were at my opening at Mollusk you have already tried her magical creations. She cooks delicious food and I highly recommend hiring her pronto. She also makes mustards, jams, her own 'lillet' and other apéritifs. Have a party! Learn how to grow food and have her design your vegetable or kitchen garden.... she can do it all. She also just started a food blog. Yay Ingrid!

I have so many stories from my last chapter in Mexico, that I have to wait to post some nug photos because it will take some tiiiiiime and a circle around the sun before I can share those with you all. But let's skip ahead to the NOW. I am back in Marfa enjoying the sweeping lands and the folks. Here to work on "west Paris" (or little green roofed white adobe house) and finish the second half of the material for my upcoming show at Mollusk, "Invisible Thread". Here I will shoot desert scapes and feelings that are not coastal in any way. Time to tie it all together.

Just saw the new palapa get built by master palapa builders. Such a strong, natural, and simple way to make a roof that looks amazing. SO cool.

Also been learning mega recipes from Alicia, our housekeeper. Tamales, Sopes, Chaya Agua Fresca, Jamaica, and more to come.

Bucerias Carnival

Haven't been outside the Casa too much, so I've been itching to go into town a bit more to get into the coastal vibes of this area. So we went to Bucerias the other night and went to the town fair. Had such a nice time being around lively sidewalks full of kids and grub, cotton candy and balloons, inflatable castles and punchy polka music. We were honored to meet a Huichol artist. He told us many mythical stories about his work.

Off to Marfa. Dreaming of Sardinia.

Adrian and I are driving to Marfa in the morning. We will complete phase II of the re-design project. Walls will be knocked down, some floors will be re-finished, and furniture will be made.

Today I began working on some new photos from my Honeymoon. These are a few from Sardinia, Tuscany and Versailles. All shot on the Rollei. More soon... I promise. Been on a bit of a blog block lately.

SB FIRE

I went to check on the Rubi-Miller house this morning and were given a tip on how to get through the road blocks and drove up near scofield park and las canoas and made it to Hillcrest. The house is ok. I took out a lot of important family items and filled Len's car and I took len's car out of there and had adrian drive my car. There are some embers and smoldering land up at las canoas and all across scofield park and gibralter but Hillcrest and the immediate surrounding neighborhood are ok for now. I watered down the house as well as the yard the best I could but police were patrolling and I got everything I felt was necessary and am staying in the San Roque area for now.

We have 20 air tankers dropping water and things are looking a little better as of right now. They predict some more Santa Ana winds to come back later in the day so they are working hard to put out the blaze. Our friend, Crosby Loggins, lost his mom's place up on gibralter. He said ‘ it looks like the moon'. Nothing left but one live chicken up there.

I evacuated my house off of Alston as well and then evacuated Adrian's grandmother and some of her things as well. Was a crazy night and havent slept but what's important is that we are all ok and I was able to get important things out of the house and the house I think will be ok.

Berlin Blast

We have arrived to the last week of our Luna di Miele. We came to Berlin to visit with Simone and celebrate the twin birthday! We made a beautiful dinner starting with the famous gougéres with arugula, bacon, onion, and pickle and also one with steinpilz (german forest mushrooms very similar to porcini) and chanterelles in cream with a slice of comté cheese. Little tiny sandwiches with the perfect tiny 'bun'. Simone made pumpkin and butternut risotto and greens and Marcin brought a cake from one of the fave bakers in town. Such a nice night of great conversation and laughs and dance floor antics with the new whitest boy alive album. Yay! what a nice suprise to hear tracks recording in the glass cube studio in Mexico from last year.

Dave Dupuis was here for the weekend ... a nice CA bro to add to the festivities. He has just come off his tour and ended it with a weekend in Berlin. We rented bikes with him yesterday and had a beautiful fall day. Such a rare treat for us. Real carpets of leaves everywhere. yes!

Adrian and I are currently in Grindelwald, Switzerland...after days in Italy on our honeymoon. We started out by flying into Pisa, picking up a car, and driving it into the belly of a massive ferry. We floated over the mediterranean waters and landed on the island of Sardinia. A craggy and beautiful island (the oldest isle on earth) with no tourists and the most intensely turquoise and cobalt blue waters I have ever seen. We stayed on a farm and ate rustic foods with various origins and discovered little cove beaches with white sand and clean, salty, clear water. After a few days on the isle, we drive back into the ferry belly and slept in a bedroom cabin and woke in Livorno. We then drove to Tuscany and stayed at a farm belonging to an architect and artist, and walked the endless paths inbetween the ripe grape vines. Watched the harvest happen and migrated north to Piedmont to taste some early white truffles and stay at another farm. I love Piedmont. The city of Alba is refined and sincere and ALL ABOUT the quality of food and wine. Slo Food Nation's headquarters are here. There are no internet cafes.

I had the best meal of my life in Barolo at a Locanda del Borgo Antico, a Michelin starred restaurant on a vineyard. I was in heaven. Every aspect of the menu was explained in detail with a warm smile and the dining room was modern and elegant but understated and true to the style of the food.

We had a post-wedding party here in Grindelwald with some friends and the weather has been super summery and ultra technicolor. Took the gondola up to Männlichen and enjoyed a long traverse to a little restaurant for Rösti and beer. Our friends have moved onto their next destination now, and so will we. Onwards to Paris. Old turf and good friends await. I will post photos shortly. YAY
